JOSEPH D. VINSO, Ph.D., MCBA, FIBA, ASA was the Donald & Carol Jean Byrnes Professor of Finance at the University of Montana where he taught corporate finance, financial analysis and valuation as well as directing the Accounting and Finance research seminar.  He has been a tenured Associate Professor of Finance and Business Economics at the University of Southern California.  In that capacity he taught in the areas of corporation finance and valuation, international financial management, financial economics, and international economics; and he was coordinator of the corporate finance area.  He has also held positions at the Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania) and the University of Michigan as well as financial analyst for the Dow Chemical Company USA.  His industrial background includes the areas of capital budgeting, financial and economic forecasting, and long range planning.

He has published in excess of 80 books and articles in many of the leading journals in the fields of finance and economics as well as business valuation.  Several of these articles concerning valuation of the fair market value of shares in closely held corporations were cited as authority in the California case of RONALD AND BARKLEY V. 4C'S ELECTRONIC PACKAGE, INC., 168 Cal.App.3d 290, 214 Cal.Rptr. 255 (1985).  He has authored several books including BUSINESS VALUATION: THEORY AND PRACTICE and LOST PROFITS DETERMINATION, J&H Publishing, Missoula, MT, 1996, as well as other books and articles in the areas of business valuation and damage determination in business or personal litigation.  He has also provided expert testimony to the United States Senate; United States District Courts (California, Arizona, Montana, Michigan); United States Bankruptcy Courts (Pennsylvania, California); California Superior Courts; the District Courts of Nevada, Indiana, and Montana; the United States Tax Court; U.S. Corps of Engineers, Board of Contract Appeals; and the Tribal Court of the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes.

He holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration (Financial Economics) from the University of Michigan; a Masters in Business Administration from Central Michigan University; and a Chemical Engineering degree from Cornell University.

Dr. Vinso is a Master Certified Business Appraiser with the Institute of Business Appraisers.  He is also a past Regional Governor for the Institute and a Member of the College of Fellows. He was recertified in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2019, and 2022.

He is an Accredited Senior Appraiser of the American Society of Appraisers in the field of Business Valuation.  He was recertified in 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2020 (until February 5,2026).  He has also been an Associate Member of the California Society of CPAs.  He has spoken at various conferences of these organizations.
